I justed returned from Future Shop and my hands are quaking!!
Resistance: Fall of Man follows an alternate history where the world did not experience World War II, the Great Depression, or the rise of Communism in Russia. A relative era of peace ensues following the Great War, ending with the revelation of a ruthless and destructive race dubbed the Chimera. In 1951, the year in which the game takes place, England finds itself under invasion. Little is known about the Chimera and their origins remain unclear. Both Asia and Europe appear to have already fallen to the Chimera in short order by this time.
The game follows U.S. Army Ranger Sgt. Nathan Hale who is operating in England alongside the British Army. During one particular assault, Hale's unit becomes infected with a Chimeran virus and the soldiers fall into a coma shortly after. Hale appears to be spared as he is the only one that manages to awaken and becomes aware of the Chimeran plot due to the infection inside of him.[1]. As a result, he becomes the key figure in a desperate operation that is launched to try and halt the invasion. The next three days are chronicled in the game as the U.S. and British forces band together in a last-ditch effort to save what is left. [2]
Setting
The title's setting is within an alternate timeline that serves as the backstory described by the main web site [3] with the divergent point appearing to be during the Spanish American War as strong isolationist sentiments prevent the entry of the United States and President William McKinley sends a secret emissary to force Spain to give Cuba its independence. Also the years after the Great War would also witness the swift recovery of Europe thanks to a strong political and economic climate that would help create the European Trade Organization, a parallel to today's European Union, removing many of the factors that would have led to World War II. This would also enable Germany to build the Weimar Republic and maintain its popularity, preventing the rise of the kind of radical extremism that would have catapulted the Nazi party into office and allow a person such as Hitler to gain power.
Alternatively, Russia had never experienced the success of the Russian Revolution that would have eventually brought Communism to the country as the revolt was put down by Tsar Mikhail, thus maintaining the monarchy. Russia would then eventually fall off of the world stage as it mysteriously closes its borders in silence. The United States would also continue its policy of isolationism, although it is one of military isolationism as opposed to the blackout of information that descends over Russia. The United States would also avoid the events that would have triggered the Great Depression and Franklin Delano Roosevelt would eventually fall from grace, ushering in a new President upon his failure to attain re-election. As the title's start year of 1951 approaches, other ominous changes are noted in Eastern Europe such as the construction of a wall across Russia's frontiers and the rumors of deserted towns and villages along its Belorussian border.
Gameplay
Resistance: Fall of Man will be a first-person shooter set in an alternate history. With it, many of its gameplay features stem from this, most notable of which is the weapons. Some weapons are based on real weapons, while some weapons are futuristically altered. Insomniac Games has combined its passion for creating exotic weapons and vehicles, such as those found in the Ratchet and Clank series, with its proprietary development engine and physics system to create unique human and Chimeran weaponry.
Each weapon will provide a unique play style and strategy. An example of this is found with the Auger (Chimeran). The primary fire for this weapon is simple rapid fire, but the bullets burrow through walls, opening up a whole new level of strategy. The secondary fire creates a barrier that is resistant to bullets. Most weapons will provide unique experiences whether they are a simple shotgun or the unique Auger.
The game will feature melee attacks, and jumping height is said to be "realistic". It will also feature player-controlled vehicles. The motion sensing feature of the PS3 controller will be used for a number of things including shaking off enemies that grab onto you, shaking off tags and flames in multiplayer, and quickly bringing up a map or leaderboard in a multiplayer match.
The game is said to run locked at 30 frames per second, offline and online, no matter what happens in-game.[4]
[edit] Multiplayer
Resistance: Fall of Man will feature a multiplayer mode for up to 40 players. Insomniac Games is currently planning to utilize the Playstation 3's online service by incorporating a smart matchmaking and ranking system, allowing for the player to be matched against similarly experienced players. The multiplayer for Resistance will allow highly customizable unranked matches, allowing the hosts to set different parameters such as hit points, weapon sets and others. Ranked matches, however, may follow a more set design to allow for fair, even play. Ranked matches will give the player experience, which will allow the player to move up different ranks. As you move up ranks, you unlock special rewards for your character. Weapon spawning will follow a much more lenient manner. The weapon-spawn points are circled by a series of lights that count down to the time a weapon will reappear. There will be several maps and five game modes, including traditional deathmatch. There will be clans, parties, and buddy lists for the game, too. Insomniac Games have also stated that the game may feature downloadable content. Resistance's multiplayer will not feature the vehicles found in campaign mode.
[edit] Storage
The final game has been revealed to be just over 16 GB. It was originally going to be 22 GB, but Insomniac cut out the PAL movies because NTSC movies can be "converted on the fly to look really good on PAL TVs". Ted Price also confirmed that there was a strong push to reduce disc size in order to shorten burn times during the testing period.[5]
[edit] Weapons
Resistance has a number of unique and creative weapons. Many with a twist on classic weapons, or completely new ideas all together. Known weapons and their functions are:
* Auger: A Chimeran developed weapon that fires a bolt of energy. This energy bolt can burrow through solid objects, to impact those behind cover, thus negating cover. The bolts slow down as they move through objects, and a spark of light can be seen, warning potential victims that their cover has been breached. The alternate fire of the Auger is an energy shield that is impenetrable except to other Auger shots.
* BullsEye: A relatively standard assault weapon developed by Chimera. The twist of the weapon is its alternate fire: the tag. By firing a tag, bullets now home in on the tag. This allows smart players to hit the enemy, then hide in cover, bending their bullets around cover to still hit enemies. Firing the Bullseye into a wall or object, however, creates a potential 'Bullseye-Bomb'. Bullets will home into the target, and swarm about to form a sphere of bullets. You can then fire it at an enemy, and the swarm of bullets will track down the locked-on enemy. If bullets remain in the swarm when the enemy dies, the swarm will hover in the air, until the Bullseye is fired again.
* L23 Far Eye: Another human weapon, the Far Eye is a sniper rifle. While aiming through the scope, the game simulates heightened reflexes by slowing down time while the player can aim normally. The Far Eye will be available for multiplayer, but the ability to slow down time will not be included.
* XR-003 Sapper: The Sapper is a unique weapon which is said to be reverse-engineered from Chimeran technology, and produced by humans. It fires unstable sticky 'goo-balls', which explode when someone moves nearby. The balls can stick together, even creating chains that dangle from the roof. The alternate fire is used for manual detonation.
* Hailstorm: The Hailstorm is Resistance's take on the minigun. Its rapid storm of fire can ricochet from walls, increasing its lethality in confined combat. Its alternate fire converts the remaining contents of the clip into a turret that auto-targets and fires at enemies.
* LAARK: The LAARK rocket launcher is unique in that its primary fire releases a singular powerful rocket, but its secondary fire is able to spread its contents into a number of miniature rockets. The weapon can also be slowed down, and even stopped mid flight. And whilst paused, its trajectory can be modified, to fire around corners, or over barricades. This weapon has been confirmed for online play.
* M5A2 Carbine: The M5A2 Carbine is the standard issue human machine gun with a 40 mm grenade launcher attachment.
* Rossmore 236: The Rossmore 236 is the basic shotgun. It can be fired single barrel or double barrel.
* Reaper: A weapon that is a new twist on an old standby: dual-wielding pistols. While most games have both pistols aimed in the same direction, the Reapers are capable of independent firing. Consider R1 the right hand and L1 the left hand. When you hold down both buttons, the reticule splits off into two individual reticules. Your hands sweep the area, and a modest auto-lock from each pistol will then latch onto whatever enemy crosses its path. This is great for taking on lots of small Chimera.
* L11-2 Dragon: The L11-2 Dragon is a standard flamethrower. Its alternate fire has been labeled as a vapor cloud. No further information exists at the moment.
* Arc Charger: The Arc Charger is a high-powered gun used by elite Chimeran soldiers. It shoots a bolt of lightning. The alternate fire allows said lightning to arc to nearby enemies.
* Grenade: An average grenade.
* Hedgehog: The Hedgehog is a Chimeran take on a grenade. When deployed the Hedgehog will launch upwards and explode, hurling spikes in every direction.
It has been said in the Official PlayStation Magazine review of Resistance: Fall of Man that 4 weapons will be unlockable after a first play-through (beating the game). It is unknown if these weapons will be new, unannounced weapons or weapons from the above list.
