Best DVD Releases
To different people this will mean different things. To some, it will be the release that kicks off an eagerly awaited series. Or it will mark the end of it. It could be the best technical release yet or it could just have that one killer episode that made it shine above anything else. Everyone has a different view on what the best of something is, especially as we all have different perceptions on the release it self due to the variety in players, TVs and sound systems.

We opened up the vote for this Best DVD Release every month to our registered users using the criteria above. The vote takes all those different things and produce a title each month that the majority of people felt, for whatever their reasons, was the best DVD of that month. The goal in the vote is for you to look at what you bought, and even with a flawed release, determine just what the best thing you got was. Do you really feel happy with it when all is said and done? And of those that made you happy, which one stands out the most?

Presented below is the list of titles our users have ranked the best of the best for the months listed.

Spiral: Vol. 1 The Melody of Logic

What are the Blade Children? This is a question Ayumu Narumi has been asking himself since his brother disappeared two years ago. But today isn't a day to bother with that as Ayumu has been accused of murder. While he tries to defend himself against growing allegations, Ayumu must unwrap the mystery of his innocence - as well as the mystery of the new professor who seems determined to pin this crime on Ayumu.

Plot 4/5
This was my first time watching Spiral, and was very enjoyable. I thought the plot was creative, and it hooked me in right away. There were some twists I didn't expect, too, which was definetly a nice touch.

Animation 4.5/5
I thought the drawings were really good, aswell as most of the animation. At times the animation wasn't smooth, frame by frame-wise, but It didn't bother me too much. I thought the drawings themselves were great, as well as the scenery and other objects.

Dubbing 3.5/5
I picked up quite a few similar voices, and I also thought certain voices didn't match certain characters. I didn't notice anything wrong with the lip syncing, and thought it was done well besides the reasons I already mentioned.

Overall 4/5
I really enjoyed this DVD, and am definitely looking forward to seeing the next volume. However, one question still remains: Who, or what, are the blade children?

Sakura Taisen: Vol. 01 - Sumire

Anime Description - For years the defense and safety of the Imperial city rested on the shoulders of Sumire Kanzaki of the Flower Troupe. But this, as with all things, must fade away. As the top star of the Imperial Operetta Company, Sumire was the power and the light from which her comrades drew their own strength and resolve. It was through her that the Flower Troupe found their courage...and through her that mant happy memories were made. Now the curtain rises for one final performance as the star that once shined so brightly begins to grow faint. As the spotlight dims on one legend, another must come center stage.

Plot 2/5
I did not care for the plot. There was way too much crying; usually every other scene had at least some crying in it. There was no action at all, just a lot of emotion. I thought they executed the music scenes well though.

Animation 4/5
It flowed nicely, and the drawings were very crisp. I thought that the shadows could use some work, as well as tears. It was good nonetheless.

Dubbing 4.5/5
The voices matched the characters well, and I did not notice any off sync voices either. The music in it was great. I thought it needed some more sound effects though.

Overall 3.5
The main aspect of this DVD that I did not care for was the plot.
Everything else was executed well. If there were action & less emotion, then maybe I would bump up the Overall score slightly.

Plot 5/5
I really enjoyed the plot. I thought the idea of doing a back-story on Hiei was great, and they executed it VERY well. Although Hiei was the main guy who got the spotlight (In the particular DVD), it was still very well done, and did show other characters.

Animation 4/5
I thought it was good. Like other animes, the artist become more experienced and can draw better and that definetly shows in this DVD. Not to the say the art in the previous DVDs was bad, this is just improving on an already great look.

Dubbing 4.5/5
I thought it was done well, and considering their were a lot of new characters being introduced they didn't have many voices that sounded like they were from shows such as Dragonball they they have also been dubbing.

Overall 4.5/5
My main complaint would be that I have to wait awhile until the next Yu Yu Hakusho DVD is available. This was the second DVD in this new saga and although I missed the first in the saga I was stilla ble to pick up on everything well. The scenes from the previous episodes were enough to allow me to understand it all.

Plot 4/5
This was my first time watching Case Closed and I definetly enjoyed it. The plot was very entertaining, there were un-expected twists, very detailed character back stories and some humor as well. One of the nicer aspects to this anime is the stories don't last for 25 episodes, and you can jump in at almost any part of the series.

Animation 3.5/5
The coloring, scenery, and other various objects were fine, but when it came to the characters it was a bit worse. You get used to it, but it takes a few minutes. The animation also had a nice flow to it, with some good "camera angles".

Dubbing 3/5
Besides the fact that some of the voices sounded like some of the other FUNimation dubbed animes, the only real complaint I have is that, I could see two of the characters in the episode had awfully similar voices, and at one point I got confused as to who was talking. I have never seen the original Japanese version, so I have little to compair to, otherwise, the dubbing was done well.

Overall 4/5
No major complaints, which is nice, I had hesitated to watch this Anime for sometime, but after finally sitting down and watching it, I really enjoyed it, and look forward to seeing the next volume.

Case Closed: Case 4, DVD 03 - Like Old Times

Anime Description - Also known as Detective Conan, this anime focuses on a teenager named Jimmy Kudo, who, despite his age, is one of the top detectives in the world. Not letting this stop him, Jimmy continues to solve crimes and put bad doers behind bars.

Plot 3.5/5
The first two episodes I enjoyed. They were in two-parts and the characters were well developed, except for one or two who didn't talk to much. Nor played a very big role. The third episode was okay, but I thought the case wasn't well thought out, and there weren't very many suspects, either.

Animation 4/5
Only part of the animation I didn't like was the characters faces. Some of them looked too similar, and their bottom lips were colored badly in some frames as well. Other than that, I liked it.

Dubbing 4/5
For the first two episodes, I have just one complaint. The main character (Conan) and a friend of his had really similar voices, and since they both sometimes alternated in talking, it got quite confusing. Other than that it was executed well.

Overall 3.5/5
The only thing that keeps this from getting a 4 is the plot for the third episode. It didn't hook me in, and didn't make you think. The dubbing for Conan's friend also keeps this from getting a 4. This hasn't been my favorite one so far, but I still look forward to seeing the next volume.

Plot 2/5
This was my first time wacthing Kiddy Grade, and I became very confused throughout the DVD. However, this is probably due to me coming in on the 13th episode. The show was a bit too technical, and I became very bored with it at times. Also, the show focused a lot of going through space and different planets, which I'm very sick of by now.

Animation 4/5
The drawing style and animation were done very nicely, and looked great. Even through the drawings were good, they were of dark/destroyed cities and endless space ships/new planets, which gets old fast.

Dubbing 3.5/5
The lip sync was off a few times, and two of the characters had rather annoying voices, but other than that it was done very well. I have never heard the Japanese voices, so I have nothing to compare it too, but that allowed me to make a better decision on if the voices really were good or not.

Overall 3/5
Because of the bad plot, I was unable to enjoy the DVD, and thus not make any of the other aspects of the show matter much.

Tenchi Muyo! GXP: Vol. 05 - The Living Ship

Anime Description - Seina Yamada may just be the unluckiest guy in the world. A classmate of Tenchi Masaki's, this walking timebomb seems to spread destruction and bad fortune wherever he goes. But when a surprise encounter with a beautiful woman leaves him with lipstick on his face and a Galaxy Police pamphlet, it seems his luck is about to turn around. Now he's become a member of the GP Academy and is about to face the challenges of squaring off against space pirates, adapting to a new advanced society, and sneaking out after curfew with his friends.

Plot 3.5/5
This was my first time watching Tenchi Muyo, but even so, after the first episode I started to enjoy/understand it. It's technical, but not too technical. They executed it very well.

Animation 3/5
The drawings were smooth and flowed nicely. The scenery and everything had nice coloring. My only gripe is that sometimes a small area in the middle of a person's lip would be erased slightly.

Audio 4.5/5
There were so many characters; yet I didn't see any voices that sounded too similar. I didn't catch any lip-syncing that was off, either. After watching an episode, I wouldn't skip the intro because I enjoyed the music. The sound effects were nice, but I thought it needed some more of those.

Overall 4/5
The music and voices really added to the score of this. I thought that some of the elements of this anime were strange. (E.G A dog/rabbit hybrid that controls the spaceship). I also thought it needed some more action, too. Besides that I enjoyed watching it.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Plot 3/5
The story of these episodes kept me hooked and interested in the story. I enjoyed how the main characters were assistants to their demon leaders and how you get to see back story on the leaders and characters. My main problems with this disc is if this is you're first time seeing Yu Yu Hakusho, you're not really going to enjoy it, and you'll have to go and watch the 100 episodes previous to it. Also, it was flooded with backstories, which I think of as a lazy writers way to explain something. It's been about 9 episodes in this Saga and almost nothing's happened. It's like one big backstory saga.

Animation 3/5
The animation was smooth and crisp, it didn't hurt my eyes or bug me. I thought it was drawn well considering it's from Yu Yu Hakusho, but compared to most other animes I don't care for it. However, you can definetly tell the artists are progressing in their skills, and improving on the animation.

Audio 4/5
The dubbing matched with the lips of the characters, fit the characters, etc. If this happens to be the only anime dubbed by FUNimation that you watch, you won't have a problem. But if you've seen a lot of the other animes that they dub, it'll get annoying hearing a bunch of the same voices. Thankfully, the majority of the characters seen in this saga don't have that problem, but everytime they do scenes with people like Genkai you can't help but be reminded of Frieza.

Overall 3/5
I would recommend this DVD to those of you already somewhat familiar with Yu Yu Hakusho. If you're not, then I suggest seeing some of the earlier DVDs, and then getting this one. My main complaints about this DVD, as mentioned above, would be the enourmous backstories, and how the story doesn't really seem to be moving along.
