"Sony is pushing developers away from its 'Universal Media Discs' and towards digital distribution of games via the PSP store."

That's the latest word from Sony director of hardware marketing John Koller, speaking to Silicon Alley Insider (via videogaming247). "Someone misinterpreted the new push as 'PSP2' development," Koller explained, "no plans for a PSP2 are underway."

If you feel confused, don't worry, so do we. Last week, mysterious sources speaking to Eurogamer claimed some developers were already working on titles for the PSP's successor. Of course, this directly contradicted a statement made a few days prior by Sony Europe honcho David Reese, who stated quite plainly, "There are currently no plans for a PSP2."

Even though two official sources have now "confirmed" that a PSP2 is currently not in development, we still can't be 100% sure about the truth of the matter. Remember, if the handheld really is being pieced together, it's in Sony's best interests to keep everything under wraps until they're good and ready to make a formal announcement. And if they're still so vehement in their denial of its existence, that announcement could be a while off.
